Over 49,000 affected by cyclonic storm

SHILLONG: As many as 49,524 people were affected due to the damage caused by the cyclonic storm and rain since April 14 in the state.
The number of affected villages is 410 and 2037 houses were damaged.
According to an official data, from April 14 till 22, as many as 146 houses were fully damaged.
Severely and partially damaged houses are 1062 and 829 respectively.
However, livestock has not been affected and there were no casualties reported.
The districts affected are East, West and South West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills.
A senior government official said the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to provide relief based on their assessment.
Earlier reports had said over 10,500 people were affected due to natural calamities. The number increased following the rain for the last few days.
Pending dues since 2014
Recently, the suppliers and contractors from Garo Hills revealed that the government is yet to pay the pending dues for the services done during the devastating flood in 2014.
When asked, an official said that the assessment for the loss of livestock will have to be further verified by the government which resulted in the delay in clearing the dues.
