SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) constituted in Sohra has shot off a letter to Public Works Department (PWD) Roads and Buildings with a demand to cancel the contract work for the 8 km Mawsmai-Shella road project assigned to CCL Company.
The JAC comprising Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), South Khasi Hills (Sohra), traditional heads, taxi owners and drivers’ association expressed displeasure and dissatisfaction with the pitiable condition of road from Mawsmai to Shella and the delay of the CCL Company to complete the work awarded to it by the state government.
The pressure group asserted that the delay and the inability of the company to complete the road project have affected locals and the tourists visiting the area.
The local economy is also hit as the locals depend their livelihood on tourism industry.
The reason they cited for the cancellation of the work is delay in completion of the road as the time scheduled to complete the work is over and poor execution of the contract work.
It is learnt that the company will apply German technology for the road construction. The work was assigned in 2016-17 but the JAC alleged that the work remained incomplete.
The JAC has urged the department to take action against the company as it has dumped mud on the main road thereby obstructing the movement of people.
