U Tirot Sing Day observed at USTM

GUWAHATI: The University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) observed the 184th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing, the Khasi Freedom Fighter, as U Tirot Sing Day at the University campus near here on Wednesday.

The programme began with floral tribute to U Tirot Sing by Dr. PK Goswami, Vice Chancellor, USTM, Guest Speaker Dr Solony Bareh, Assistant Professor, Nongthalang College, West Jaintia Hills, other dignitaries, faculty members and students of USTM, according to a communique issued by the varsity authority.

The Guest Speaker, Dr Solony Bareh in her introductory speech said that, Tirot Sing was an astute organiser and tactician. During his battles with the British, he organised the Khasi warriors. His ability to inspire the leaders and cadre came in for high praise, even from the enemy. Tirot Sing was one of the greatest patriots of the nation who denied the throne offered by British rulers and choose to fight against them till his last breath. 

Dr Tiewla Subon Uriah, Principal School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USTM spoke about U Tirot Singh and his freedom struggle. She said that Tirot Singh and his band of warriors conducted night raids on the British outposts and large units of British military contingents were ambushed and massacred.

Tirot Sing, also known as U Tirot Sing Syiem (1802 – 1835), was one of the chiefs of the Khasi people in the early 19th century. He drew his lineage from the Syiemlieh clan. He was Syiem (Chief) of Nongkhlaw, part of the Khasi Hills. His surname was Syiem Lieh. He was a constitutional head sharing corporate authority with his Council, general representatives of the leading clans within his territory. Tirot Sing declared war and fought against British attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills. He died on 17 July 1835.
