CM visits his adopted school, assures betterment
Nongstoin: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday visited Shohphria Govt LP School, Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, along with Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh and local MLA Macmillan Byrsat. The chief minister interacted with the students of the school and the teachers, and assured of improving the functioning of the school with better facilities. Sangma also took the opportunity to urge other ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats to follow suit and adopt school and better its infrastructure facilities. Earlier this year, he had adopted the school and had sanctioned one-and-half-month salary amounting to Rs. 3 lakh for its renovation.

WGH DC bans waste dumping
TURA: In view of waste materials including plastic and thermocol being disposed off directly into streams at Tura bazaar, Rongram market and other weekly markets of West Garo Hills (WGH), the district Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, in a fresh order, has prohibited the dumping of all kinds of waste into rivers and streams of the entire district. “Any person found violating the order shall be liable to be penalised under Section 45(A) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 (imprisonment upto three months or with a fine which may extend upto Rs 10,000 or with both, and in case of failure or contravention continues, with additional fine, which may extend to Rs 5,000 everyday),” the order stated.

Speed limit for trucks in SWGH 
TURA: The South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued an order directing all trucks, loaded or empty, not to exceed the speed limit of 20 kilometre per hour while plying through the populated areas of the district. The order was given in view of public complaints regarding speeding and reckless driving by drivers through the district which has led to increase in road accidents. The order comes into force with immediate effect and will continue until further orders.

Inter-Media Committee
SHILLONG: The Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC) held its monthly meeting for the month of July at ICAR Research Complex for NEH region in Umiam on Tuesday. The meeting held was an open forum in which the activities of the various organisations were highlighted. The scopes for improvement were also discussed. Prior to the IMPCC meet, the director of the institute (ICAR Research complex for NEH region) N Prakash launched the newsletter and audio-visual news of KIRAN which is an interactive web portal hosted at ICAR Research complex for NEH region, Umiam.

Occupational health and safety 
TURA: A one-day programme on occupational health and safety was organised by the Department of Family Resource Management, College of Community Science of the Central Agriculture University, Tura, in collaboration with the office of the District Sericulture Officer, East Garo Hills at the latter’s conference hall in Williamnagar on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, keeping in view the occupation of the people of the region, urged the gathering to be health-conscious in their respective field of activities. On the occasion, Swapnali Borah, HoD of Family Resource Management, College of Community Science, Tura, delivered the key-note address.

SHTC holds inaugural event
Shillong: Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai, held an inaugural function of the New Academic Year 2019 on Wednesday. Rev. Dominic Jala SDB, Archbishop of Shillong, graced the occasion as the chief guest while Rev. Fr Paul Olpendro Lyngkot, SDB, Salesian Provincial of Shillong and Chairman of Governing Body were the guest of honour. During the programme, nearly 150 students from different parts of the country were present. In an address to the staff and the students during the programme, the chief guest said, “Today what makes young people happy is truth and what is difficult is not accepted as truth.” He further added, “Many young people are confused with what is truth.”

Water Conservation Campaign
Shillong: The North East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversty Society (NESFAS) on Tuesday participated in the Water Conservation Awareness Campaign held at Mawlum Mawjahksew, West Khasi Hills, organised by the community. The NGO also collaborated with the community to host several programmes related to one of their ongoing campaigns: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. A cleaning drive was held where all the community members participated. The NESFAS team along with students from the Department of Social Work from Women’s College engaged themselves in painting walls. The NESFAS team also highlighted the importance of breastfeeding and of eating local and traditional food in comparison to the common food, which is found everywhere. Several songs, short skits and a dance performance were also organised.
