Even as the state government has made announcement regarding initiating several legislative measures to address the problem of illegal immigration, the pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) groups have announced a three-night road blockade from October 1.

Announcing this here on Sunday, FKJGP’s information and publicity secretary Eldie N Lyngdoh said the night road blockade, to be effective in all the eleven districts of the state, will come into force again on October 3 and 4 while leaving out October 2, which is a national holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti. The road blockade will be effective from 8pm to 5am (next day).

Lyngdoh said that the pressure groups would continue their agitation as a mark of protest against the adamant attitude of the state government in implementing ILP system in the state.

Referring to the decision of government to implement the Regulation of Landlords and Tenants Verification Bill, Lyngdoh said this decision was against the wishes of the people and the pressure groups.

The blockade, the fifth in the series of anti-government stirs, will also be enforced on NH-40 and NH-44 from Guwahati to Silchar and is likely to affect transportation of essential commodities to Tripura, Mizoram, southern Assam and parts of Manipur.

“Our demand is for the government to immediately implement ILP in the state which is a mechanism that can tackle the problem of influx in the state but the state is steadfast in introducing a new law for the tenants and this will instead protect the illegal migrants living as tenants,” Lyngdoh said.

“The government is trying to buy time by introducing an Act which will only suit the needs and requirements of the landlords,” he said.

The state Cabinet had approved the draft Regulation of Landlords and Tenants Verification Bill 2013 last week and is all set for a ‘public consultation meet’ on October 3.

The pressure groups have also washed their hands clean regarding their involvement with any political party while adding that they have no intention to topple government or the chief minister.
