KSU unit pays rich tribute to U Tirot Sing Syiem

NONGPOH:In commemorating the 184th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, one of the freedom fighter who fought against the British Empire in the 18th century, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills District unit on Wednesday paid a rich floral tribute to honour the freedom fighter for his sacrifices.

The Khasi Students’ Union, North Khasi Hills District led by its President, Ferdinald  Kharkamni and its General Secretary, Lambok Rymbai paid a special tribute to Tirot Sing Syiem at his secret cave which is situated at Umthlu Nongkhla under Hima Nongkhlaw West Khasi Hills District bordering with Ri Bhoi District.

As per the historical background informed by the villagers, the secret cave of U Tirot Sing locally known as ‘Krem Tirot’ was used by Tirot Sing Syiem as a safe haven to hide from the British forces in the 18th century.

Besides, the leaders and members of KSU, North Khasi Hills District, the programme was also attended by the local headman of Umthlu Nongkhla village, Hilarious Lawrynniang and members of KSU from Mairang, West Khasi Hills.

While speaking after paying a rich tribute to Tirot Sing Syiem at his hiding secret cave, the KSU North Khasi Hills District President, Ferdinald Kharkamni said that the Union was much happier to take part in paying rich tribute on his 184th death anniversary which reminded us about his sacrifices and hardship he faced on fighting against the British rule.

“His fighting spirit to set his people free from the British dictatorial rule is highly appreciated and as the Union we will keep on following his footstep to protect our own people and we will not let that our people will be overshadowed by the outsiders” he said, adding that the Union will discuss with the central leaders to initiate with the state government for construction a kind of memorial stone at his secret cave as a sign of respect to this freedom fighter” he added.

Meanwhile, the HNYF, Northern Region led by its President, Marcus Marten accompanied by its members and the students from JNV, Niangbari paid a floral tribute in the school premises in which the statue U Tirot Sing is erected as to commemorate his 184th death anniversary.
