Governor Prakash Mehrotra has been asked by the Centre to delay his departure for London. According to a highly placed source, the instruction was conveyed to the Governor over telephone on February 16.

Mr. Mehrotra, the Indian High Commission -designate for Britain, was to have left Shillong for good on February 26. He was planning to spend a few days in Assam before leaving for Delhi en route to London.

It is understood that the developments in London following the killing of Indian Assistant High Commissioner and the delay in finding a suitable successor to Mr Mehrotra are the principal reasons for the “stay-there” order.
