Editor,
Referring to the article “Tyranny of Tradition” by Patricia Mukhim (ST Jan 21, 2011), I appreciate the author for calling a spade a spade. Time has come for bursting out of the traditional cocoon which has enslaved our society for long and moved our generation one step backward. It is evident that some unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of the illiteracy of the traditional heads for their cheap popularity and some take political mileage out of the situation. Such souls do not bother about the general welfare as long as their narrow self interest is met. It may be noted that the traditional institution of the Khasis is highly undemocratic. Many Rangbah Shnong in Shillong have been holding office with out election for many years. Some of them have not convened any durbar for fear that a lot of uncomfortable queries and issues may be raised against them in the Durbar. On the other hand the residents are so complacent that they dare not agitate against the Rangbah Shnong for fear of victimization. Even if periodic elections are held some four or five interested persons would raise their hands proposing a particular name of their choice to the post of Rangbah Shnong while the majority do not oppose or raise their voice for fear of unwanted scenes, so this is highly undemocratic.
I would urge upon the residents to kindly take a classic example of electing a Rangbah Shnong as is done in Bishnupur by secret ballot.
Only then, the traditional heads will be accountable, will behave responsibly and act positively.
Yours etc.,
B Lyngdoh
