SHILLONG: Senior Congress leader and former MPCC president OL Nongtdu has accused Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma of violating AICC directive several times to call a CLP meeting to solve the leadership imbroglio.

“Several reminders have been sent by the AICC directing Dr Sangma to hold the CLP meeting, but I fail to understand why he (Dr Sangma) is not abiding by the AICC directive. If he violates the party directive, action might be taken against him,” Nongtdu told reporters here on Wednesday.

“The Chief Minister should not lose his discretion in holding of the CLP meeting. He would not want an external force to do so,” he said.

“I met Madam a few days back and requested her that democracy should prevail and voice of the majority should be respected,” the former MPCC president said.

“The present Chief Minister has lost the support of the majority of the legislators within the CLP, thus presently, there is no effective governance in the State,” stated the letter faxed to Ms Gandhi on Tuesday evening after a meeting of at least 18 dissident legislators.

The legislators met at the residence of former Chief Minister DD Lapang here to take strong exception against the statement made by AICC general secretary Dr Dhaniram Shandil saying Dr Sangma would complete his term as Chief Minister.

The letter, according to sources, was signed by Lapang, whom the dissident group had projected as the leader in the oust-Mukul campaign.

In a three paragraph message to Ms Gandhi, the dissident group urged her to direct Dr Sangma to convene a CLP meeting at the earliest.

The MPCC president Friday Lyngdoh had earlier reiterated that the matter (leadership issue) had been resolved and the AICC has made it clear that Dr Sangma will continue as Chief Minister for the remaining term.
