New Assam MLAs take oath

Pranab Gogoi new Speaker

GUWAHATI: All the 126 newly-elected members of Assam Assembly took oath of affirmation on Monday as the 13th Assembly began its first session here.

Senior most Congress legislator Dr Bhumidhar Barman administered the oath of affirmation to the newly-elected legislators in the capacity of the pro-tem Speaker.

The House later elected unanimously, senior Congress legislator and former minister Pranab Gogoi as the Speaker of the Assembly.

The Congress has 78 members in the House while AIUDF is the second largest political group with 18 MLAs. The AGP and BJP have ten and five MLAs respectively while Bodo People’s Front (BPF) has 12 legislators.

The rest of the members include two Independent and the lone TC MLA.

Congratulating Gogoi on his election as the Speaker, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said he would help to facilitate smooth functioning of the state Assembly.
