Deepika Kumari lifts Indian team to 2nd place

Kolkata: India’s Deepika Kumari came up with an impressive performance to finish fourth overall (1,354 points) behind three Koreans on the opening day of the World Cup (Stage II) archery competition at Antalya in Turkey, according to reports received here.

The archer from Ranchi also helped India finish second (4,005 points) behind Korea in the team ranking.

Otherwise, the Indians had a bad day on Tuesday with the men’s recurve team finishing ninth and individually Jayanta Talukdar (1,335, 15th), Thupuvoyi Swuro (1,316, 29th), Rahul Banerjee (1,312, 31st) and Tarundeep Rai (1,296, 54th) doing poorly.

India was ranked ninth (3,963 points) in the men’s section and will take on eighth ranked Japan in the first round of the team championship. Korea finished at No.1 with 4,091. Mexico was a surprising second, logging 4,051 and France was third with 4,013.

In the women’s section, L. Bombayla Devi (1,334, 11th), Chekrovolu Swuro (1,317, 30th) and Seema Verma (1,292, 52nd) were also unimpressive. In the team event, India will play 15th ranked Turkey in the first round.

World record holder Kim Woojin of Korea (1,381, 1st), Oh Jin Hyek of Korea (1,362, 2nd) and Dai Xiaoxiang of China (1,361, 3rd) took the top three places in the men’s section. Ki Bo Be (1,372, 1st), Jung Dasomi (1,360, 2nd) and Han Gyeonghee (1,356, 3rd), all from Korea, occupied the top three spots. (IANS)
