NONGSTOIN: After the recent ambush by the GNLA killing there policemen near Mendipathar, according to intelligence reports, the outfit is planning a series of attacks against security personnel and the general public in order to make its presence felt.

William Nagar in East Garo Hills and Shallang in West Khasi Hills are some of the prime targets of the outfit to carry out subversive activities, the report said.

Shallang, the commercial hub of the district due to the multi-crore coal trade, has been witnessing a number of threats from the GNLA in the form of extortion from businessmen as well as check gates operated by government agencies and traditional institutions.

Superintendent of Police West Khasi Hills, N Rajamarthandan told The Shillong Times that the coal mine areas of Shallang and Borsora in West Khasi Hills fall under the operational schemes of the GNLA.

He said police are being extremely vigilant to avoid any such eventuality and a police platoon has been deputed at Wahthre village, which has been a gate-way to the Garo militants to enter West Khasi Hills from East Garo Hills. Police presence has also been heightened at Borsora, he said.
