The militants also snatched away three weapons from the body guards.

The Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), which maintains a close link with the anti-talks faction of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to the account provided by one of the injured body guards to the police, a group of about 12 militants called out the Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) from his residence at around 12 midnight before shooting him down.

The attack on one of its elected members of the hill district autonomous council (MAC) has raised concern within the ruling Congress even as Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Gogoi has asked Chief Secretary N K Das to have the matter enquired into immediately by Additional Chief Secretary P P Verma. The probe will go into the circumstances that led to the incident and the steps to be taken to prevent such type of attack in future.

Verma, who has been directed to proceed immediately to Karbi Anglong, has been given 10 days’ time to submit his report on the incident.
