Woman dies in hit-and-run case

SHILLONG: A woman, Basida Lyngwi, who was knocked down by a speeding Gypsy at Malki here on Tuesday night, succumbed to her injuries at Shillong Civil Hospital on Wednesday. The Gypsy fled the scene after the accident that took place while she was crossing the road around 10 pm on Tuesday.

Herbert Lyngdoh, DSP (City) on Wednesday said the son of the deceased who was present on the sopt could not note down the registration number of the speeding vehicle. Speaking on the increasing cases of road accidents including hit-and-run cases in the city, the DSP said his department was conducting awareness drives on safe driving, drunken driving, need for intact brakes and light in vehicles, speed limits etc.

“We also regularly conduct enforcement drives with daily checking of vehicles. Besides, our flying squad is on a round-the-clock job. We can’t be everywhere all the time but road accidents are controlled now,” he added.
