JOWAI: The proposed construction of the bridge across the river Wyrjiang in Block I, by the Assam PWD, has come to a halt.

Extra Additional Commissioner SS Syiemlieh on Saturday led a team of magistrates including Ms BC Pakyntein, Ms D Syngai and Ms MM Lytan along with Jowai Police to verify the reports of alleged encroachment.

The officials asked the workers engaged by Assam PWD to immediately stop the construction work since the river comes under Jaintia Hills. Speaking to The Shillong Times, Syiemlieh said the work would remain suspended till the governments of Meghalaya and Assam sort out the matter.

Meanwhile, Assam Police also inspected the area on Sunday afternoon.
