NONGSTOIN: Representatives of various fishery associations of West Khasi Hills have opposed the restrictions imposed on organising fishing competitions.

The organisations said they had developed the fisheries to earn their livelihood which is now being hampered due to the new rules.

The district administration earlier passed an order to regulate entry fees into fishing competitions.

In an earlier incident, a competition held at Pamphyrnai turned into a public nuisance as participants resorted to unfair means by bringing dead fish from outside and forced the organisers to weigh the fish.

On refusing to do so, chaos occured and the organisers had to return all the entry fees.

This incident prompted the authorities to suspend all further competitions
