Encephalitis toll rises to 42 in Bihar

Muzaffarpur: Two more children died of encephalitis, taking the toll in the fever to 42 in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district on Saturday. One child died of encephalitis at Srikrishna Medical College Hospital and another child died of the same disease at Kejriwal hospital here, officials said. A Central team, which had collected blood samples of the patients to ascertain the cause of the death on Thursday, had said the children were suffering from encephalitis. Fifteen more children are undergoing treatment for the fever at two hospitals in the district, they said. (PTI)

Militant held for attacking J&K PS

Srinagar: Police on Saturday said it has arrested the youth who had fired the rifle grenade at Sopore Police station in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Tanveer Ahmad Seeru who carried out the attack on Sopore police station yesterday has been arrested, a police spokesman said, adding Seeru was also involved in several incidents of stone-pelting last year. Militants had fired a rifle grenade at Sopore police station, resulting in injuries to six persons including a policeman. (PTI)

Jilted lover slashes girl’s face

Mumbai: Police on Saturday arrested from Wagle estate in Thane a 25-year-old youth who slashed a 17-year-old college girl’s face with a knife, leaving stab marks on her cheek and chin. The incident occurred last afternoon at Bhakti marg at Mulund in north-east Mumbai when the accused Mangesh Deshmukh accosted the girl when she was on way back home from college, police said. Deshmukh stopped the girl in the middle of the road even though she was not willing to talk. The accused expressed his love for her but the girl slapped him, after which the youth took out a knife and slashed her face. The accused fled from the spot. (UNI)

Businessman shot dead

Chandauli (UP): A businessman was shot dead inside his shop by two motorcycle borne unidentified persons in Mugalsarai area, near here, police said on Saturday. Parmanand Jaisawal alias Funti (24), who ran a mobile store, was killed last night, they said, adding he was immediately rushed to Kabir Chaura hospital in Varanasi where doctors declared him dead. ‘Adulterous’ wife murders husband

Meerut: A woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her husband for objecting to her illicit relationship with her paramour, police said on Saturday. Sonu hammered her 30-year-old husband Lokesh to death with the help of her lover Satish on Thursday night, SP Prabal Pratap Singh said. The incident came to light yesterday when locals informed police of a biker carrying a sack with blood dripping from it in Kalajari village here, Singh said, adding, he was on its way to dump the dead body. The woman has been sent to jail and efforts are on to nab the absconding lover, they said. (PTI)

64-year-old man commits suicide

Mumbai: A 64-year-old retired government employee committed suicide by jumping from his sixth floor flat at Bhandup in north-east Mumbai, police said on Saturday. Umanath Shenoy took the extreme step after coming back to his house in Neptune residential complex after a stroll on Thursday. According to his wife’s statement, Umanath rushed to the balcony and jumped out. Neighbours said his wife was not keeping well for the last two years and this could have depressed Umanath. She was receiving treatment for ‘personality disorder’. (UNI)

9 bar girls among 32 held in Mumbai

Mumbai: Police arrested 32 people, including nine bar girls, in a raid at a bar in Borivali in north Mumbai, police said. The bar girls were found soliciting customers and making obscene gestures when the police raided the Sadabahar Bar and restaurant on thursday night. Among the arrested was the bar manager but the owner was at large. (UNI)

Tiger enters Sundarbans village

Sundarbans (WB): A Royal Bengal Tiger on Saturday entered a village at Satjelia in Gosaba delta here and killed two goats, forest officials said. The tiger came from Pirkhali jungle of Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and crossed Garal river to enter Emilybari village, they said, adding that the animal killed two goats from the house of a villager and was spotted when eating beside a bush. The villagers threw fishing nets on the tiger and circled the animal at a spot on the side of the river, the officials said. Forest department officials have reached the spot and the tiger will be tranquilised soon, they said. (PTI)

Now, maps, survey sheets in Adarsh case go missing

Mumbai: Maps and some survey sheets from 1872-1960 related to Adarsh land and surrounding Colaba areas have gone missing from the land records office of the city, the fourth such instance of files related to the controversial society going missing.
The two-member Commission, probing the housing society scam, was told by Sanjay Dikhle, Superintendent of City Survey and Land Records, that historical maps of 1847 (the first time when Mumbai was mapped scientifically) and 1882 were “not available” in his office.
The maps of 1847 or 1882 could have shown whether the Adarsh plot existed at the time.  Also, “certain survey sheets from 1872-1960 pertaining to the Adarsh land and surrounding areas in Colaba are missing,” Dikhle told the probe commission on Friday. (PTI)
However, survey maps of 1872 were available, he said.

Two shepherds, 400 sheep die due to cloudburst

Dehradun: Two shepherds and around 400 sheep died on Saturday due to a cloudburst in Hathwadi village of Uttarakashi district in Uttarakhand, officials said.
The incident took place when the two shepherds were grazing their sheep on mountains when a sudden cloudburst swept them away along with their sheep, the official said. (PTI)
