Protest over assault of youth by cops

SHILLONG: Police personnel attached to Additional SP (Traffic) Herbert G Lyngdoh allegedly assaulted a youth at Hynniew Mer in Upper Shillong resulting in a hue and cry in the area on Sunday evening.

Kitbor Kharkongor (22) from Mawnianglah, Hynniew Mer was sitting inside a truck parked on the roadside when he was asked to come out by the armed policemen and beaten up badly “without any reason”.

The cops, who were in plain clothes, also broke windshields of two trucks (ML-05 E 9893 and AS-01 DC 6152) parked on the roadside.

“The three policemen assaulted me without any reason,” Kitbor told reporters, who went to the spot, showing a broken lathi with which he was beaten up.

The victim and the driver of the two trucks filed an FIR in this connection but they agreed to withdraw it after police promised to pay for the treatment of Kitbor and the damage caused to the two trucks.
