Shillong: The Dorbar Shnong of Mawiong rim and Mawiong Umjapung have threatened to go on with their protest against the construction of the slaughter house at Mawlai Mawiong which is adversely affecting the drinking water of the people of Mawlai.

The ongoing protest from the Dorbar Shnongs against the construction of the slaughter house run by the state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary has been going on for the past one month. The construction of the house was inspected by local MLA, FS Cajee in the presence of President of the Mawlai Town Dorbar, Stanling Khongwir last month and just recently by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister BM Lanong.

It may be mentioned that the soil dug for the construction of the slaughter house was allowed to flow to the Umshing river, the main source of drinking water for the people of Mawlai, hence, making the water unfit for drinking and causing inconvenience to the people.

“Even after holding talks with the respective minister and officials, we have not yet come to a concrete decision”, said Mawiong Rim Rangbah Shnong, S Lyngdoh Nongpyiur while talking to reporters here on Wednesday and added that the two Dorbar Shnongs will continue their protest against the construction of the Slaughter House.

This project costing Rs 22 crore was sanctioned by the State government to ease the burden of butchers in and around the city.

However, the site chosen for the project is very close to Marten at Mawlai which according to the residents of Mawiong will have impact on the cleanliness of the area and its adjacent localities.

When contacted Lanong refused to comment on the issue.
