NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday found nothing wrong in assertions by its leaders that Rahul Gandhi should become Prime Minister, but maintained that Manmohan Singh has been carrying out his responsibilities “seriously”.

“Rahul Gandhi should become Prime Minister is the aspiration and desire of Congress workers and if anyone is expressing it is not committing any crime,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.

He, however, hastened to add that it is also a fact that Singh is the Prime Minister of the country and has carried out his “task sincerely and seriously” since 2004.

The response was to a question whether the chorus of “Rahul for PM” would undermine the authority of Manmohan Singh.

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh is prominent among those who have been making a strong pitch for Rahul as Prime Minister saying he was “mature enough” for the top job. (PTI)
