Red-faced Director stages ‘walkout

Shillong: NEIGRIHMS director Dr ME Yeolekar had to come out of the meeting with the MBBS students after he failed to give convincing answers to the queries raised by them.

Dr Yeolekar was caught on the wrong foot as he did not expect the students to pose so many pointed questions to him.

The Director had convened the meeting on Thursday with the intention of convincing the students to return to their classes.

While talking to reporters after the meeting, the MBBS students informed that Dr Yeolekar walked out of the meeting half way through with an entourage of security personnel after he failed to answer their queries.

They further stated, “Our meeting with the director was not satisfactory. Dr Yeolekar did not give any assurance to our demands.

Besides the Director was so incoherent that we could not understand a single word of what he was trying to convey to us”.

According to the MBBS students, Dr Yeolekar is giving all lame excuses expressing the inability of the administration to address the demands of the students.

The Director blamed the hilly terrain and the geographical location of the institute for the shortage of faculties in the institute. He also cited internal and external migration of the faculty as another reason which has exacerbated the problem.

When they asked the director how long it would take for the new faculty to join, the MBBS students said that Dr Yeolekar failed to give any response but digressed from the topic. The director has cited court cases, administrative delays and numerous other excuses for no recruitment of faculties ever since he joined the institute in August 13, 2009. When they asked about the quality of education being imparted to the MBBS students, the director maintained that all the skills required by the doctors can be learned during their internship. According to the Director, the quality education is not a concern at the moment, the MBBS students said.

“It seems the administration believes that a student’s right to demand for quality education is unrealistic,” the MBBS students added.

After being unsatisfied with the outcome of the meeting with the Director, the MBBS students have decided to continue with their strike even and even to forego their examination if the administration does not increase the faculty strength in the Institute immediately.
