NONGSTOIN: Areas under Mawshynrut Block in West Khasi Hills have been allegedly facing nearly 18-hour load shedding every day for the last five days. Making the allegation, FKJGP Riangdo Circle president Arkhelos Diengngan said the power failure is due to a fault in the 132 KV line while MeECL authorities claimed there was no such complaint from the area. The power supply was not restored in Riangdo, Shallang and Athiabari areas till Friday night without any prior notice from the MeECL.

Deficit teachers demand arrears

SHILLONG: Teachers’ agitations might rock the State once again if the Government failed to release the remaining 60 per cent arrears to the deficit teachers. The deficit teachers, who had resorted to a series of agitations for months before the Government finally agreed to release their 40 per cent arrears, have started murmuring their demand once again for the 60 per cent arrears. They are expecting that the Government would release the arrears on the coming Teacher’s Day as a gift to the teachers, Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) joint secretary, BK Khongjirem, told reporters on Friday.

Last year, the deficit teachers had walked out of the Teachers’ Day function in presence of the then Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to protest the non-payment of the 40 per cent arrears.

“We want action from the Government and not sugary words. Education rests on the teachers and quality education is possible only if the Government understand the problems of teachers,” he said.

Correction

The fourth paragraph of the new report “Meghalaya House…” the report should be read as “Hek, who met a contractor of the project, … and not as reported. The error is regretted.
