SHILLONG: The Urban Shopping Complex in Police Bazar is all set to get a facelift by August this year.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “We will take some drastic steps to bring some changes in the shopping complex and by August it will get a much-needed facelift”.

“The complex will get a facelift when there is a collaborative effort from shop owners, shoppers and officers of the Meghalaya Urban Development Agency (MUDA),” she said.

In the bid to keep the complex safe and sound, the department is contemplating to design a plan of action like reinforcing a security check mechanism at the shopping complex.

The shopkeepers in the complex have also been directed keep a dustbin in front of their shops to keep the surroundings clean.

It is learnt that the complex presently has 14 home guards and 23 parking attendants while the department would reassign duties to ‘put them into use.

According to Lyngdoh, renewal of leases would also be done shortly.

An ATM is also likely to be setup in the complex so that shoppers can easily do their monetary transactions and on Monday the minister also held a meeting with the executive engineer of MUDA and sought an explanation on the ventilation shaft of the complex.

“I have verified and checked the ventilation shaft. There is no scientific truth that the food joint (subway) has blocked ventilation to the complex,” she said, adding, “In fact, when I checked the ventilation mechanism was not switched on.”
