KOHIMA: The Nagaland government has written to the chief justice of Gauhati High Court seeking his intervention for early disposal of a writ petition filed by residents of Inavi village in connection with an eviction drive carried out inside the Intangki National Park, which is pending in Kohima bench of the Court.

The move was made yesterday by the state government following the June 30 incident where a group of armed miscreants attacked the villagers of Inavi within the National Park, killing two village elders, seriously injuring two others and destroying some houses and granaries.

Chief secretary Lalthara in a letter said that the law and order situation within the park has become very sensitive with the Western Sumi Hoho giving an ultimatum to the state government to apprehend the culprits within 15 days and Zeliangrong Volunteers for Forest and Environmental Protection also issuing an ultimatum to the government to evict the Inavi encroachers within seven days, failing which, both the groups have threatened to “take their own course of action.”

The attackers claimed to be members of Zeliangrong Volunteers for Forest and Environment Protection, insisting that the Zeliangrong tribe was the original land owner of the disputed area. (PTI)
