Moradabad: A Deputy Inspector General of Uttar Pradesh Police was injured when an irate mob, protesting alleged police misbehaviour with women, indulged in arson and brickbatting in a village here on Wednesday afternoon. DIG (Moradabad) Ashok Kumar received head injuries and a police jeep was set afire in violence in Asatalpur village, officials said. The trouble arose when a police team, which raided the village in connection with a case, faced stiff resistance from locals. The villagers alleged the police misbehaved with women and showed disrespect to a holy book. When they staged a sit-in on the Moradabad-Sambhal road, DIG Ashok Kumar with a posse of policemen rushed to the scene. He too encountered strong opposition from the locals who indulged in heavy brickbatting and set afire a police jeep. The DIG suffered head injuries and was admitted to a private hospital, the officials said. Police in strength had been deployed in the village where the sitution was tense but under control, they said. (PTI)
2 cops suspended after accused escaped from custody
Firozabad (UP): Two policemen posted at the north police station of the city were suspended after an accused fled from their custody, police said on Wednesday. Rehman, who was arrested on Tuesday night after he allegedly entered a house in Mohan Nagar to commit a theft, fled from the police station. Taking note of the incident, SP Majil Saini suspended the two policemen posted at the station and said that a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused. (PTI)
Man arrested for smuggling arms
Lucknow: A man was arrested for his alleged involvement in illegal arms trading in Bareilly district of the state, police here said on Wednesday. Sukhpal Singh Chauhan was arrested from Vohit village yesterday and 14 country-made revolvers of 315 bore and two pistols of 12 bore were seized from him, they said. During interrogation, Chauhan said that he used to bring arms from Nigohi area of neighbouring Shahjahanpur district and supply them in Bareilly. A case in this connection has been registered, said officials, adding that an investigation is on to net other people involved in the racket. (PTI)
Two suspected Maoists arrested
Bundu (Jharkhand): A hardcore Maoist surrendered and two suspected Maoists were arrested in separate developments in Ranchi district. Following a tip-off, Hira Singh Munda and Etwa Mahali were arrested last night from Anadih village, Superintendent of Police (Ranchi-rural) S Michael Raj told the media. One of them led the police to a place where 310 boosters were hidden. In a separate development, veteran Maoist Nishant surrendered before the police at Bundu police station, the police said. Nishant was active in Saranda forests of West Singhbhum district for over last four years. (PTI)
Leopard mauls youth to death
Chikmagalur (K’taka): A leopard which strayed into a farm mauled a youth to death and injured another in Tarikere taluk on Wednesday, police said. Vishwanath (17), the victim, and Subramanya were working in the farm at Tanigebail in Tarikere when the wild cat attacked them. When Forest Department officials reached the village, angry locals set fire to their jeep, police said, adding the situation was later brought under control. (PTI)
