SHILLONG: The state government has issued instructions issued to the Jaintia Hills district administration regarding illegal plying of private cars as passenger vehicles in the district.

This was informed by HL Pyrtuh, Secretary, Transport, Meghalaya here on Wednesday.

The move came after the Meghalaya Transport Department, as per the direction from Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (UMRTH) directed the Transport Secretary and DC, Jaintia Hills to initiate action against all private cars running as passenger vehicles in Khliehrihat subdivision.

“We have received instructions from the Government of India in this regard and have issued instructions to the DC, Jaintia Hills District. But since we have not received any written reply in this regard from the DC so far, I cannot say what is the ground situation as of now,” Pyrtuh said.

It may be mentioned that the All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJYWO) had earlier brought to the notice of the UMRTH about the illegal plying of private cars as passenger vehicles in Khliehrihat and Lad-Rymbai region of Jaintia Hills District.

The AJYWO said that such illegal plying of vehicles is against the law as per the Central Motor Vehicles Act and also the Meghalaya Motor Vehicles Taxation Act. The youth association also raised concern against such practices since passengers, mainly women and children, in the district are facing problems due to mounting crimes and drug abuse.
