SHILLONG: The Mawsy-nram Dorbar Shnong executive committee, which recently ostracised seventeen families, has made it clear that the matter could be resolved it the families agree to accept the compromise formula.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the Assistant secretary of the executive committee PW Shangpliang said the matter could still be settled if the families would re-consider their decision on the compromise formula.
The traditional village council recently ostracised seventeen families for filing an RTI questioning the village authorities why they were denied of their right to avail food grains supplied by the government in the village.
As per the RTI findings, village chief Artowel Kharshandi and his wife Asorda Marbaniang, who run a fair price shop, had denied 72 months’ quota of foodgrain supply to Below Poverty Line and Above Poverty Line families covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana. between 2002-2008.
Shangpliang maintained that the decision to ostracise the 17 families was taken at a general council meeting of Dorbar after the latter withdrew their earlier decision to come to an understanding on the matter.
The Dorbar Shnong had convened a meeting on June 9 where both the complainants and the dealer were summoned, he said adding,”In this meeting the dealer admitted the misappropriation and assured that rice and sugar of the period of 2008 would be given to the beneficiaries”.
The member of the Dorbar stated that the complainants agreed to accept the decision.
Surprisingly, the complainants did not attend the June 13 meeting, he said adding that this annoyed the public and decided to ostracise the families.
However, the decision of the general council is yet to come into effect as no rule is framed for the people who are boycotted, he added
Reacting to a query about the misappropriation revealed in the RTI, the executive committee members said, “We accept what the RTI has revealed and we tried to solve the matter within the Dorbar Shnong.
It may be mentioned that the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has already ordered for inquiry into the matter and he is presently awaiting the report.
