Talukdar earns Olympic quota berth

Kolkata:Jayanta Talukdar earned an Olympic quota place from the men’s individual recurve event of the Archery World Championship at Turin, in Italy on Friday. Seeded fifth in the elimination round, Talukdar got a bye to reach round three where he beat 28th ranked Antti Tekoniemi (Finland) 6-4, thus booking a London 2012 berth. Talukdar was one of the eight individuals to win a quota place in the men’s section, according to information received here.However, Talukdar went down to 44th ranked Jeff Henckels of Luxembourg 5-6 in the next round to see his title hopes go in vain. Santosh wins gold in President’s Cup

New Delhi: Asian Games silver medallist V. Santosh Kumar (64kg) Friday defeated Malinin Alexander of Russia to win the gold in the 21st President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was a great achievement for the 19-year-old Indian considering his last tournament was the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in December. Two other Indians Lakhbir Singh (69kg), Jasveer Singh (81kg) lost their respective semi-final bouts and had to be content with the bronze medal. India’s medals tally thus stood at one gold and three bronze medals. (IANS)

Liverpool complete Adam transfer

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool completed the signing of Scottish midfielder Charlie Adam from relegated Blackpool on Thursday, the English Premier League confirmed. The 25-year-old put pen to paper on his new contract on Thursday afternoon after successfully completing a medical, the club’s official website said. Liverpool had previously had two bids rejected in the January transfer window for Adam, with the highest offer reported to be in the region of £6.5 million ($10.4m). This time, however, it is understood that Blackpool have accepted £7.5 million rising to £8 million depending on appearances. (Agencies)

Novak pulls out of Davis Cup singles

Halmstad (Sweden): World number one Novak Djokovic has pulled out of his Davis Cup quarter-final singles rubber against Sweden’s Ervin Eleskovic blaming a knee injury on Friday. The Wimbledon champion was replaced by Janko Tipsarevic for the second rubber of the day. No decision has yet been made regarding Djokovic’s participation in Sunday’s singles, when he is scheduled to face Michael Ryderstedt. (Agencies)
