JeM commander among two killed

Srinagar: Two militants, one of them a self-styled commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad, were killed in a 20-hour gunbattle which left an army officer injured in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Army initially said three militants were holed up in a house at Bonhajin in Rajpora area, 45-km from here, but the search yielded only two bodies. Army troops and the Special Operations Group of the police launched a search operation in village Bonhajin on Friday evening. The house where the militants were hiding was cordoned off and the ultras were asked to surrender. One of ultras was killed in the exchange of fire. “In the morning, we launched a fresh offensive and another militant was killed,” an Army officer said. One of slain militants was a “top commander” of JeM and was identified as Ehsan Bhai alias Mamoo, a resident of Pakistan. The other killed militant was identified as Javid Nengroo alias Umair, a resident of Pulwama district. (PTI)

Wanted farmer leader arrested in UP

Noida: Absconding farmer leader Manvir Singh Tevatia, who led the agitation by peasants in Bhatta-Parsaul villages in May, was on Saturday arrested by Uttar Pradesh police from Delhi. Tevatia was caught in the national capital after being chased by the police for over two kms following a tip-off, Gautam Buddha Nagar district SSP Jyoti Narayan told reporters. The farmer leader was staying in a house at Hauz Khas in south Delhi, he said. “Police teams followed Tevatia as he came out of C-31 Hauz Khas in a car. One woman and a care taker of the house was with him in the car. As he realised that he was being followed, he alighted from the car near a traffic signal and ran. But the police teams chased him for more than two km and arrested him,” the SSP said. He has been booked for murder and kidnapping and other sections of the IPC, the official said. “For the last six months he was instigating farmers and kidnappng officials and resorting to violence. Several cases were registered against him,” he said. (PTI)

Two dead in honour killing

Badaun: A woman was alledegly shot dead along with her widower paramour in Ujhani area here on Saturday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Navneet Rana said here Nemvati (27) was staying at her grandfather’s place at Mallah Nagar village. She was having illicit relationship with widower Munna Lal (45), a resident of Kanshiram Nagar district. The woman’s grandfather and her uncle allegedly gunned down the two, when they were going to attend a marriage ceremony. The bodies have been sent for the autopsy, he added. (UNI)

One killed in AC blast at Delhi hotel

New Delhi: A mechanic was killed and another man injured when the compressor of an air-conditioner exploded in a hotel in south Delhi on Saturday, officials said. “The deceased has been identified as Jamshed, an air-conditioner mechanic, while the injured is identified as Shiv Kumar, a gardener,” said a police official. “The incident was reported around 3 p.m. in Qutab Hotel when someone switched on the main current line when Jamshed was repairing the AC’s compressor,” a fire department official said. The injured man has been admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The hotel, however, denied any such blast occurred on its premises. “This is false news as nothing happened. There was a minor blast in cooking gas cylinder and there was no injury,” a hotel official said. (IANS)

IT commissioner among three held

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an income tax commissioner, his aide and a chartered accountant in Mumbai in a graft case, an official said on Saturday. “Income Tax Commissioner (Appeal) RP Meena and chartered accountant UP Pai were arrested on Friday from Mumbai following a complaint,” said the official. A tax assessee filed the complaint against Meena with the CBI. The complainant said that he was being harassed by the commissioner who was not clearing his file. He directed the complainant to pay him money through Pai. On failure to do so, Meena threatened to impose a heavy penalty on them. “The complainant told us that the commissioner made it clear to him that the closure report would not be given till illegal gratification is paid,” said the official. Pai on behalf of Meena asked the complainant to give Rs.2.2 lakh as bribe on Friday at a restaurant near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. “We laid a trap and arrested Pai,” said the official. Teenager gangraped by instructor, others

New Delhi: A 16-year-old teenager was gangraped by her dance instructor and his three friends — two of them juveniles — at a dance school in west Delhi, police said on Saturday. All four have been caught. “Gulshan allegedly gangraped his student along with his three friends in a dance school in Vikaspuri area July 5,” said a police officer. The incident came to light on July 7 when the missing girl was rescued from Gulshan’s house by police after her family members lodged a complaint. After a medical examination confirmed rape, police were on the track of Gulshan and the other rapists. “Gulshan, his friend Ram were arrested and the two juveniles detained and sent to a observation home on Friday,” said the officer.
