SHILLONG: The inauguration of the two proposed border haats has been postponed once again following no confirmation from both the Centre and the Bangladesh Government.

The State Government had made all arrangements to inaugurate the border haat at Lalapani-Dangar, Balat on July 6 and the other at Kalaichar Hills, West Garo Hills on July 4, official sources said, adding, both the countries’ governments could not agree on the dates.

Elaborate security arrangements were also made for the inaugural ceremonies.

Security personnel were sent to Kalaichar and Balat to take stock of the area before the scheduled dates of border haat inauguration, the whole exercise has gone waste now,” sources said on Sunday.

Even construction of the pandals for the events had to be stopped midway.

“We had even fixed the caterer for the ceremony,” the sources said.

Any fresh date for inauguration of the border haats would all depend on the confirmation of both the Centre and the Bangladesh Government.

Meanwhile, sources said the border haat at Lalapani-Dangar, Balat cannot be opened before the end of the monsoon since a swelling river there would prevent people from Bangladesh to reach the haat now.”

However, there is no such problem with the border haat at Kalaichar, sources added.
