SHILLONG: The customers of Laban branch of United Bank of India (UBI) on Monday faced inconvenience due to the shifting of the branch from the old building to an adjacent building.

The bank displayed a notice on the old building notice board stating that the bank has shifted to the adjacent building with effect from Monday.

A Lumparing-based customer said “the bank has rightly displayed a notice in the old building but the authorities should have published an advertisement in the local newspapers in this regard.”

“I would have not come had I knew it,” said an elderly lady who retuned home as transaction was not possible in the morning hours.

Another customer who came to withdraw money from Shibnath Tilla said he was asked by the bank officials to come in the evening. “After coming this much, if I am asked to come again in the afternoon, can any one keep his cool,” said an elderly man.

Like him several other customers had to return home since banking transactions was stalled due lack of internet connectivity

An official of the bank said later informed The Shillong Times that internet connectivity was restored in the new building only after 2pm. “To compensate the customers, due to our inability to attend them in the morning hours, we extended the banking business hours and entertained customers till late evening,” said the official admitting that in the morning nearby customers were told to come in the evening.

The official said customers were entertained with all other banking facilities in the morning hours except cash transactions. The bank normally functions till 3:30 pm for cash transactions and up to 4:30 pm for non-cash transactions but it went beyond these normal business hours on Monday.

The bank in the new building will also have an ATM kiosk. “The technicians are working to establish the link with the server and it will start functioning from this week,” said the banker.
