SHILLONG: In a bid to tackle the growing insurgent activities in Garo Hills, the highly sophisticated Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos have been deployed in the region.
Additional DGP (Law and Order) Rajiv Mehta on Tuesday said two CoBRA units have been deployed in Garo Hills to tackle the activities of militant groups.
CoBRA commandos will assist the state police in the ongoing combing operations to flush out GNLA militants from forested areas.
CoBRA is the only paramilitary force specifically trained in guerilla warfare. This elite fighting unit has been trained to track, hunt and eliminate.
CoBRAs are trained in the Army’s elite Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram. They are adept in the art of camouflage and jungle warfare. All the three districts of Garo Hills have been severely affected by the unlawful activities of GNLA as several people have either been abducted or killed by the outfit in the recent past.
The acting Director General of Police of the State B Kezo said the CoBRA commandos would be deployed in the those stretches where there is more extremism.
The State police recently busted a GNLA camp deep in a jungle at Nengmandalgre, near Ganinggre village, eight kms from Williamnagar town across Simsang river besides the police also recovered two powerful IEDs presumably gifted to the Garo outfit by the ULFA.
It is learnt that five companies of the BSF would soon be deployed in the region to further avenge the advancement of GNLA.
