Women body seeks reservation

KOHIMA: The Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho (AMK), the apex body of Angami women appreciated the move of the state government for incorporating the provision of reservation for women under Nagaland Municipal Act.A joint press release issued by AMK president Salhoutuonuo Kruse and General Secretary Avonuo Theünuo said women could play tremendous role in deciding a ‘nation’s destiny being active participants in public matters.However, the release said although the state government had promulgated one-third reservation for women in municipal and town councils of Nagaland by amending the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 in 2006, the Act had not yet been implemented.The organization pointed out that half of the countries of the world today, including most advanced nations, has quota for women in their parliaments.It extended solidarity with various Naga women bodies which voiced forth their concern for early implementation of the Act to pave way for women to have greater participation in the building up of the society.  Insurgents kill 2253 in10 yrs

GUWAHATI: Altogether 2253 persons have been killed by insurgents during the period of 2001-2011 in Assam. Replying to a question by Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF) legislator Kamalsing Narzary, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, replying on behalf of the Chief Minister, who holds the home portfolio, said those killed include 1962 civilians and 291 security personnel. Altogether 1759 insurgents and 25 civilians have been killed in encounters with security forces during the said period, he said. Besides these, 150 civilians have lost their lives in firing by security personnel to control law and order situation, the minister added. (PTI)

 Three children drown in river

RANGIYA: At least three children, including a girl, were on Tuesday drowned in a river in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district. According to official sources the three met their watery grave in river Soramari while they were trying to cross it. The bodies of the three children were fished out later. (PTI)

 Militant killed

GUWAHATI:The self-styled commander-in-chief of tribal militant group KPLT, Apang Engti, was killed along with another militant in an encounter with police in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district early Tuesday morning.Police said the encounter took place at Sokikhola, under Bokajan sub-division of the district, in the wee hours on Tuesday between the police team and Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT).The c-in-c was killed in the encounter, while another cadre, who was injured, succumbed later at the hospital.The bodyguard of Engti, Saribhang, was arrested by the police.A large number of arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter spot, police added.
