NONGSTOIN: The Nong-stoin Regional Local Taxi Owner & Driver Association has demanded transfer of the Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills, Dr Raja Marthandan, within 15 days for his alleged failure to send alert to the various police check posts in the district about stealing of a car which was recovered later.
The car thief Phrairistar Mawtyllup alias Phantom was apprehended by the members of the Association from Rambrai on Wednesday, a day after he had stolen the car from Nongstoin when its owner Phlastarwell Dkhar of Nongpyngdeng village left the key behind.
Accusing the SP of failing to send alert to the check posts about the car theft despite his promise, the NRLTODA claimed that the car was recovered due to its sole effort.
The Association members apprehended the car thief from Rambrai market on Wednesday morning and subsequently the car was found with a fake number plate.
He confessed to the Association to be a member of a bigger network of vehicle lifters and that he was supposed to hand over the car to his “boss”.
“Phantom” was roughed up by a huge mob at Nongstoin market before being handed over to Nongstoin police station.
The Association, meanwhile, criticised the Deputy Commissioner of the district for allegedly not paying any attention to its plea not to release some arrested criminals.
The car thief was arrested last week for looting Rs 24,000 from the house of one Bringwell Marthong of Mawthaw Rambrai village, but was released from the district jail recently.
