SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) is planning to introduce online payment of electricity bills to check the extra rush in the bill payment counters of the Corporation.

Disclosing the MeECL plan here on Friday, Power Minister AT Mondal said, “This is expected to ease the extra rush as well as relieve the consumers from standing in a long queues before the counters.”

He also informed that the MeECL has appointed franchises in some districts like Jaintia Hills to distribute electricity bills as well as collect the bill amounts from the consumers in order to reduce the burden on the Corporation’s offices.

The system will be introduced in all the districts by next year, he said.

Meanwhile, Mondal refused any comment on any chance to review the government’s decision to hike the vehicular taxes, saying he was awaiting the arrival of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to deliberate on the issue.

Dr Sangma, who is currently in USA, is expected to return on July 19. Three NGOs — KSU, JSU and East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association (EKHLTWA) — have called for office picketing on July 19 and 20 in Khasi-Jaintia Hills to protest the revised taxes.
