GUWAHATI:At least two people were feared drowned as the flood situation in northern Assam worsened on Friday with spiralling waters of all major rivers in the region continued flowing over the red mark, overtopping national highways, washing away bridges and embankments and rendering hundreds homeless.

In Lakhimpur, eight rivers were in spate, affecting scores of villages, official sources said.

The national highway at Naoboicha had been overtopped, while an important bridge over the Ranganadi river partially washed away.

One person had been washed away by the same river.A boat, with eleven passengers, had capsized in Subansiri river.

Of them, ten had been rescued, while one remained missing.

In Gohpur of Sonitpur district, the Brahmajan, Balijan and Kukurjan rivers were in spate, affecting vast tracts of areas.Flood waters had also overtopped the national highway in Gohpur.

The Jiabhoroli river was rising at an alarming speed in Tezpur, threatening to wash away vital embankments.

Flood waters could enter premises of the Tezpur central University as well as disrupt the airport in the town if the water levels continued rising.

Rains in bordering areas of Arunachal Pradesh had mainly led to spiralling water levels of the rivers. (UNI)
