KOHIMA:Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha MP C M Chang has suggested that a Commission, on the model of the European Commission comprising SAARC countries, must be contemplated for a long-term vision and action plan for sustainable development in the region.

According to official sources here on Wednesday while sharing his views at the 5th conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians, New Dehli recently, on the topic ”Sustainable development in SAARC countries-the way forward”, the MP opined that the membership of SAARC countries must be expanded further to include big economies in the ASEAN, adding without including powerful economies of the Asian Region, SAARC would remain a dwarf institution.

He urged the conference to focus on promotion of democracy and constitutional stability in each member country, promotion of regional security on the basis of peace and non-aggression between member countries, promotion of trade, commerce and common currency based upon mutual benefit, promotion of collective voting by member countries on all issues in the UN and other world bodies; and constituting a SAARC Monetary Fund for addressing key economic problems and for channeling aid to member countries.
