AGARTALA:In a desperate attempt, insurgents of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT-BM) have abducted eight tribal villagers from a remote tribal hamlet at gun point. However, the abductees have not served any ransom note yet.

A group of NLFT militants raided Debendra Karbari Para, a remote tribal village, 16 km from Chawmanu police station on Tuesday night and abducted four villagers- Arun Chakma (35) , Ganja Chakma (45), Sudhyajoy Chakma (35) and Ratanjoy Chakma (27).

While leaving the village, the militants also took away four more villagers- Baisakh chakma (30), Sumanta Chakma (30), Kahindra Tripura (35) and Fallenjoy Tripura (25).Senior police officials including the DIG (Northern range) along with additional forces rushed to the spot and started combing operation to rescue the kidnapped persons.

According to sources, insurgents might have sneaked into Bangladesh territory as the village is very close to the International border. BSF has been asked to maintain strict vigil along the border to foil any intrusion attempt.

It may be noted that six people, including a government staff were kidnapped by NLFT insurgents from South Tripura’s Nutun Bazar area on July 1. They are still in militant captivity.

Only few days back, DGP K Saleem Ali had claimed that militant movement within the state’s territory has come down to zero level owing to intensive pressure from the security forces.

But spiraling incidents of abductions seems to be an eye-opener for the DGP that his assessment was wrong.

Sources claimed, all the six kidnapped villagers were confined in an NLFT hideout in Bangladesh soil. BSF authority was asked to take up the issue with its Bangladesh counterpart- Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG). However, no development has taken place yet as BSF Tripura Frontier virtually remained headless after Inspector General AK (IG) AK Jain was posted out of the state last month. Now, IG Mizoram-Cachar is looking after the Tripura Frontier as additional charge.
