NEHU contemplates central evaluation system

Our Spl Correspondent

Shillong: Yet again the NEHU undergraduate results are delayed leaving many students, who have applied to other universities outside Meghalaya, in the lurch.

A principal of a reputed college here rued the inordinate delay in publishing the results.

He felt that NEHU was being irresponsible and that commitments made in the past to speed up the evaluation process have not been effected.

The Principal said a number of bright students from his college had applied to Jawaharlal Nehru University and elsewhere but unless they produce their mark sheets students will not be admitted. This has frustrated several students.

Some have already forfeited their seats on account of the delay in the Final Year BA results.

Responding to these charges, Prof AN Rai, Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, said the principals are well aware of the problems.

“At a meeting convened recently to discuss examination reforms this issue was discussed. I don’t know about past baggage but since I joined I have tried to understand where the delay lies. We are contemplating on having central evaluation centres at Shillong, Tura, Nongstoin and Jowai so that college teachers come to these centres to evaluate the scripts,” Prof Rai explained, adding that answers scripts of under-graduate students are evaluated by college teachers.

Later speaking to The Shillong Times, Pro-VC Dr David Syiemlieh said, “In the past we were able to publish the BA Final year results independently, before the 1st and 2nd year results. But since we agreed to allow two back subjects of BA 1st year in the 2nd year and similarly two back subjects of the 2nd year in the Final year, we have to publish the results in sequential order.”

For now, Prof Syiemlieh informed that NEHU will come out with the 2nd year BA results by the end of this week and the BA Final results early next week.

Defending NEHU’s position, Dr Syiemlieh said anyone who visits the University website and clicks the under graduate exams file will see the large variety of exams that the University conducts every year between February to April. There’s every kind of examination from Music, to BBA, BCom, BSc, Nursing and what have you? Prof Syiemlieh informed that the University is coming up with the semester system in under-graduate education from 2012.

When asked if the college teachers would agree to a centralised evaluation system, Prof Rai said, “The system would require the goodwill and cooperation of the college teachers and I cannot see why they would resists that if it is for the good of the students. I intend to appeal to the MCTA also for its collaboration.”
