UK moves on from chicken tikka masala to jalfrezi
London: Until recently, chicken tikka masala was called Britain’s favourite dish, but a new poll claims that the tingling taste buds have moved on to the spicier jalfrezi, a dish invented during the Mughal era in north India.
According to the poll by ‘Chaat!’, the in-house magazine of the British Curry Club, the jalfrezi is now the most popular choice of customers in Indian restaurants in Britain.
The chicken tikka masala, widely seen as a dish invented in Britain, has fallen to the eighth place in the poll. Dave Jenkins, the editor of magazine, told the Daily Telegraph: “It’s really interesting to see that jalfrezi has topped the list. Being a spice lover myself, I think this is great news. People have been depending on the milder curries for too long now, so it’s great to see some more adventurous dishes topping the list.”
Of the 1,058 people surveyed, 21 per cent voted for the jalfrezi and 18 per cent for the ‘madras’ dish. Rogan josh came third, with 11 per cent. The korma could only manage 10th place with two per cent of votes.
Ghulam Noon, the Mumbai-born entrepreneur regarded as Britain’s ‘curry king’, said he was not surprised by the poll findings. He told the newspaper: “People’s taste buds have changed. (PTI)
9-year-old boy becomes world’s youngest to fly hot air balloon solo
Washington: A nine-year-old American boy has become the world’s youngest solo hot-air balloonist.
Bobby Bradley set the record when he took to the skies high above the New Mexico Desert, south of Albuquerque, in an ultralight-type balloon.
Bradley did so despite his fear of heights, the Daily Mail reports.
“It was a nice, calm day. I had other balloons around me. All my friends were watching from the ground. It was beautiful and awesome. I loved it,” the paper quoted Bradley, as saying.
Bradley started training to be a hot-air balloon pilot at just four years old.
As a toddler, he has been afraid of the heat and noise of the burners as he watched his dad, world-renowned and record-breaking balloon pilot Troy Bradley.
But as soon as his father started taking him on trips, Bobby began asking about flying solo.
Under American aviation law, the legal age for piloting a standard-sized balloon is 14. (ANI)
5-year-old boy accidentally shot dead by brother
Washington: A 10-year-old American boy accidentally shot and killed his five-year-old brother with a gun he found at his home.
A male babysitter was looking after the brothers while their parents were out at the time of the shooting.
He and his older brother were playing in a room next door to the babysitter when the man heard a shot.
The incident took place at a house in Belleville, Illinois, the Daily Mail reports.
The five-year-old died yesterday in what police described as an ”extremely tragic” accidental shooting.
“This was not a self-inflicted wound. We”re still trying to determine how they got access to the weapon,” said Belleville Police Chief Bill Clay.
They are questioning the ten-year-old, but said that he has not been detained. (ANI)
Remains of Hitler’s deputy cremated in Germany
Berlin: Remains of Adolf Hitler’s deputy and Nazi criminal Rudolf Hess have been cremated to scatter his ashes over a lake to prevent his grave from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine, German tabloid Bild reported.
“Hess was cremated today, but his scattering on the lake’s waters has not been carried out,” Bild quoted the dean of Hans parish, Jurgen Buchta as saying Thursday.
The body of Hitler’s deputy in the Nazi Party was exhumed Wednesday after his relatives gave their approval.
“It all started early at 4 a.m. At a depth of about 1.5 metres the undertaker discovered the remains of Rudolf Hess. There was nothing left of the coffin, only the bones lay in the ground. The remains were placed in a new coffin,” Andreas Fadel, the head of the cemetery where Hess had been buried in Wunsiedel, northeast Bavaria, told the tabloid.
Hess was sentenced to life in prison by the Nuremberg Tribunal in 1946.
On Aug 17, 1987, the body of the 93-year-old Hess was found in a garden house at the Spandau Prison in western Berlin with an electrical cord wrapped around his neck. There was speculation at the time that Hess was murdered, but his death was disguised as a suicide.
Since his death, neo-Nazis from around Europe have gathered every year in Wunsiedel for memorials, marches and demonstrations around his death anniversary. (IANS)
Paedophile’s house under siege
Moscow: Over 200 residents in a Russian city kept the house of a suspected paedophile under siege for six hours early Friday following a report that he sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl, RIA Novosti reported.
The mother of the girl had reported the incident Thursday and investigators were conducting a search in the suspect’s house in Blagoveshchensk city when a lynch mob surrounded the building and started demanding “fair justice”.
“Investigators attempted to move the suspect out of the house, but the crowd wouldn’t let them do it. They had to call in riot police,” said Alexei Lubinsky, a senior regional police official.
The negotiations between police and residents continued for almost six hours and ended in a deadlock. (IANS)
