London: Singer Amy Winehouse, who was found dead at her north London home Saturday night, has joined Club-27, a term used for music greats who died young.

These music greats’ premature deaths have often been associated with troubled lives and hard living, with a lot of physical abuse in between, usually involving drink or drugs, or both, Daily Telegraph reported.

One of the Club-27’s members was Jimi Hendrix, who died in the early hours of Sep 18, 1970 in London after having spent the previous evening at a party. The official cause of death of this guitar great was asphyxiation on vomit.

American singer and musician Robert Leroy Johnson died Aug 16, 1938. He was another great whose talent was so marked by the time of his death at 27 that he has been cited – by noted guitarist and vocalist Eric Clapton, no less – as “the most important blues singer that ever lived”.

Even as there are a number of differing accounts of his death, but the likelihood is that he was poisoned with strychnine – by a lover’s envied husband, Daily Telegraph report added.

Brian Jones, the guitarist with the Rolling Stones, drowned in a swimming pool in 1969. The official report described it as “death by misadventure”.

The 1943-born American singer Janis Joplin died of a probable heroin overdose Oct 4, 1970.

Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, and no stranger to controversy, died of “heart failure” in 1971. He died in a Paris apartment bathtub.

Kurt Cobain, lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana, joined the Club-27 after he died in 1994. He was born Feb 20, 1967. He committed suicide and the body was found lying at his Lake Washington home for days. (IANS)
