Shillong: The Megh-alaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and the Khasi Hills United Democratic Alliance (KHUDA), a ruling coalition in the KHADC, in a joint meeting, have refused to accept the resignation of KHADC CEM PN Syiem.

Two days after Syiem submitted his resignation letter, an emergent meeting was held here on the district council office premises on Monday wherein both MPCC and KHUDA unanimously decided not to accept Syiem’s resignation.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, the District Council Affairs Minister HDR Lyngdoh said the meeting decided to request Syiem to withdraw his resignation and at the same time urged the chairman of the KHADC Fabian Lyngdoh not to process Syiem’s resignation letter.

Lyngdoh said, “The ruling coalition expressed full faith in Syiem’s leadership”.

Reacting to reports that the MPCC had pressurized Syiem to put in his papers, Lyngdoh said “such reports are mere speculations and baseless”. “Even the MPCC has expressed confidence in his (Syiem) leadership,” Lyngdoh said.

The District Council Affairs Minister also said that Syiem would respect the sentiment of the majority and continue as the CEM till the end of the term in 2014.

It may be mentioned here that Syiem, who is also an MLA, submitted his resignation letter to MPCC president Friday Lyngdoh and council chairman Fabian Lyngdoh on Saturday.

Citing personal reasons for his resignation, Syiem said he wanted to spend more time in his constituency.

Meanwhile, MPCC president, Friday Lyngdoh also refused to accept Syiem’s resignation.

“PN Syiem can do much better if he continues as the CEM,” said Lyngdoh while adding “if Syiem is still a member of Congress, then he is bound to accept the advice of the party.”

Syiem could not be contacted for his comments.
