SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has appealed to the Centre to appoint local persons as heads of the two prestigious institutions – NEHU and NEIGRIHMS.

The MPCC has referred the names of Prof David Syiemlieh and Dr Faith Rangad as the party’s choice for the posts of the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU and Director of NEIGRIHMS respectively.

Proposing the names to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in a recent meeting in New Delhi, the MPCC underlined the need to appoint locals as heads of the two premier institutions.

“Both the Prime Minister and Ms Gandhi had assured that locals would be given preference after the term of the present incumbents end,” MPCC president Friday Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday.

During the meeting, the MPCC also demanded for an increase in the MBBS seats reserved for locals at NEIGRIHMS from the present nine to 20 and that more local teachers be appointed in NEHU. (Contd on P-10)

(Contd from P-1) The MPCC also urged Dr Singh and Ms Gandhi to sanction a railway line to connect Shillong with Silchar in Assam for better connectivity.

The MPCC president said the meeting discussed the issue of Land Transfer Act in the State and expressed concern over the alleged benami transactions that have alienated tribal lands.
