Scholarship, cycle for Muslim girls’ education in UP

Lucknow: Ahead of assembly polls next year, Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to give scholarship and cycles to promote Muslim girls’ madrasa education.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati, an official spokesman said here. As per the decision Savitri Bai Phule Balika Shiksha Madad Yojna in recognised madarsas in the state, girls belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families passing maulvi/munshi examination (equivalent to class 10th) from UP Madarsa Education Board would get scholarship of RS 15,000 and a cycle on taking admission in Aalim first year (intermediate).

In the second year, they will get a scholarship of Rs 10,000, the spokesman said.

The scholarship would be given to students who have cleared high school examination this year and have taken admission in Aalim first year. It will be given to only those girl students whose parents or husbands are BPL or Antyodaya card holders. In case of a married beneficiary, she should not be less than 18 years of age. At present, there are 1571 madarsa of Aalim level in the state having permanent recognition. Of this, 459 are aided and 1112 are unaided. As per the data of Madarsa Board, there were 73,693 registered students in 2007, of whom 27,464 were girls and the number increased to 58,449 by 2010. (PTI)
