SHILLONG: On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Divas, the NCC Unit of St Anthony’s College organised a commemorative function on the 12th death anniversary of war hero, Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum in the college premises here on Tuesday.

The life and death of this martyr who died fighting infiltrators in the Batalik sub-sector of Kargil in north of Jammu and Kashmir was remembered by the NCC unit, teachers, staffs and students of this college. Floral tribute was paid to this war hero by his brother, K Geoffrey Nongrum and others.

It may be mentioned that Keishing Clifford Nongrum was awarded the Nation’s second highest wartime gallantry award Maha Vir Chakra on August 15, 1999 for acts of bravery and selfless courage.

Remembering the hero, K Geoffrey Nongrum, hoped the sacrifice of his younger brother would inspire others to join the Army and serve the nation.

He said in his last conversation with Captain Nongrum, the latter had told him he could die in the Kargil operation but that they shouldn’t feel sad as he would bring honour to them and the state.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sainik Board secretary Brigadier William JB Sturgeon urged the students to follow the footsteps of this war hero by being selfless and courageous.

Captain Nongrum was a student of Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong who later graduated from St Anthony’s college in the year 1996 where he got through the Defence examination in his first try and later joined the Army forces.

It may be mentioned that the Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year in honour of the Kargil War’s Heroes who defeated Pakistan in the 1999 war.
