SHILLONG: Seeing the success of the JNNURM bus service introduced just a week ago here, demand started pouring in from other parts of the State to introduce the bus service in the respective districts at the earliest.

The Ri-Bhoi Students’ Union (RBSU) has already intimated the government about the need to introduce the JNNURM buses in the district as well.

“There is a need for the posh buses to ply the streets of our district too as it will benefit the local people in a larger way,” RBSU president, Tynshain Lang Lapang said, adding, “Majority of the villagers who are poor besides the school and college going students rely heavily on the buses as it the cheapest mode of communication,”

The Union members on Thursday met Transport Minister AT Mondal, who assured them that the JNNURM buses would be available as soon as the rest of the buses allotted for the State reach Shillong.

The buses would operate in areas like Umshning and Nongpoh in the district, he said.

At present, there are 32 JNNURM buses plying in Shillong city and 10 others are expected to arrive soon.
