Wrong parking a menace for city traffic police

 Shillong: Parking along the roadside at will by car owners is the primary reason for traffic snarls in and around the capital city.

To curb the common practice all over the city, Shillong traffic police on Thursday embarked on a random checking in and around Lachuamiere area, penalising all the wrongly parked vehicles.

The traffic police are now using two trucks to tow such wrongly-parked vehicles in the city.

“This is a menace and we face this almost 24 hours a day,” remarked a visibly perturbed sub-inspector.

Parking on both sides of the road from Barik Point to Horse Shoe Building is a common trend which often leads to traffic snarls on the narrow road.

However, the vehicle owners rushed to clear the road within five minutes after the police team arrived and started towing the wrongly-parked cars.

The situation in the stretch from the Secretariat up to the PWD office is the same as vehicles are seen happily parked on both sides of the road thereby narrowing it further and again affecting smooth flow of traffic.

Additional SP (Traffic) HG Lyngdoh said, “It is a humungous task for our department to discharge our duties as we are under tremendous pressure 24×7 even as we are short in man power.”
