SHILLONG: A major tragedy was averted as high-tension electricity lines fell upon the compound of the Ramakrishna Mission UP School at Umsoshun here on Friday when no one in the school was out in the open. However, a class VI student was injured as he was hit by a falling wire, causing severe pain in his ear, said a school teacher.

The power lines snapped causing huge sparks on the school campus as an electric pole fell down around 11:30 am allegedly due to massive digging carried out by labourers engaged by the nearby Lakreh Memorial School without caring for the pole’s foundation.

The electric sparks from the snapped power lines spread even inside the classrooms of Ramakrishna Mission UP School, causing panic among the students and the teachers. MeECL personnel rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. They said the electric pole cannot be removed before Monday. According to local residents, there is no hope of restoration of electricity in the area in the next three days.
