SHILLONG: On September 13, 2010 Bilda Nengnong saved a young girl from a potential rapist, a male helper of the house where the girl was working as a domestic help. For this act of bravery, Nengnong was commended by the Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei.

Bilda Nengnong was felicitated by the President of Ka Lympung ki Seng Kynthei, Kong Theilin Phanbuh, on July 21 last at a function at Step by Step School here.

It was while walking along the road at Risa Colony in city, that Bilda heard the desperate scream of a young girl. Unmindful of her own safety, she at once rushed to the house to rescue the distressed girl from the clutches of the criminal.

Bilda took on the potential rapist. Seeing this angry, non-nonsense woman rushing towards him menacingly the man panicked. He ran to the bathroom to hide. But Bilda was not to be outwitted. Before running out to seek help, she bolted the bathroom door to prevent the criminal from escaping.

Eventually with the help of the people of the locality the would- be rapist was apprehended and later handed over to the police.

What has won Bilda all- round praise was her undaunted spirit and complete disregard for her own safety even though the adversary she was confronting was a male, physically stronger as well as dangerous since he had a criminal bent of mind.

This act of bravery of Bilda would have gone unsung and unnoticed had it not been for Seng Kynthei Risa Colony who wrote to the President of the Synjuk ki Seng Kynthei, Shillong to accord recognition to Bilda for her exceptional act of bravery.
