4 killed, 3 injured in road accident
Dindigul: Four people were killed and three seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling collided headon with a lorry at Ambilikkai village near Oddanchathiram in Dindigul district, on Saturday. Police said the deceased were identified as Chandrasekhar (46), Stephen Raj (41), Rubesh Murugesan (60) and Chandrasekhar (30), all hailing from Tiruppur. They were proceeding to Madurai from Tiruppur, while the lorry laden with firewood was going to Tiruppur from Nilakottai, when the mishap occurred. Three women occupants of the car were seriouly injured in the mishap. They were admitted to the government hospital at Oddanchathiram, police said. (UNI)
Militant killed in Kashmir gunfight
Srinagar: A separatist guerilla was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district Saturday, police said. Security forces surrounded a house in Rationpora village in north Kashmir after specific information about the presence of a guerrilla inside. “The militant was asked to surrender but he started firing, triggering an encounter,” a police officer said. The militant’s identity is being established. (IANS)
Himachal authority to get logo to minimise human toll in mishaps
Shimla: Six years after it was constituted, Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has decided to get ‘Disaster Logo’for display at disaster-prone locations across the state in a bid to minimise human toll in mishaps. The Authority took the decision after Himachal Pradesh High Court rapped the government for failing to save the lives of labourers who died in the cloudburst on July 22 when they were engaged in Rohtang Tunnel work at Manali. The logo or insignia will be selected through open competition and winning entry will get a cash prize of Rs 10,000. August 15 is the deadline for entries. The high resolution logo could either be handmade or computer-designed but it will be accepted in soft form only. Teenagers killed in road mishap
Jaunpur (UP): Two teenagers were killed on Saturday when a truck rammed into a roadside eatery here, police said. The incident took place at Badalpur area when the truck, coming from Varanasi, skidded off the road and rammed into the eatery, killing two 17-year-old boys who were sleeping on the veranda, they said. Search is on to nab the truck driver who fled from the spot leaving behind the vehicle, police said. (PTI)
One shot dead in Patna
Patna: A person was shot dead by unidentified criminals near Mithan Ghat under Khajekalla Police Station here on Saturday. Police said that the miscreants opened fire on Vijay Kumar Yadav near Mithan Ghat. He died on the spot in the attack. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem, police added. ”Criminals managed to escape from the spot after the incident,” police said, adding that raids were being carried out to nab them. Motive behind the killing was stated to be land dispute, police further added. (UNI)
Three arrested with fake RCs, stamps in Jammu
Jammu: Three people were arrested with fake registration certificates and stamps in this winter capital of the state, police said. “Based on a specific information, police on Friday conducted raids and arrested three people along with fake stamps, registration certificates and driving licenses from Satwari area of city outskirts,” police here today said. They said about 20 stamps of different sections of Regional Transport Office Jammu and other fake documents were recovered from their possessions. The accused were identified as Ashok Kumar, resident of Chatha, Janak Singh, resident of Digiana and Ravi Kumar, resident of Nai Basti. A case under sections 420, 465, 468, 473 and 120-B has been registered against them while the investigations are in progress. (UNI)
French couple impressed by Hindu customs
Puducherry: Attracted to Hindu culture, a french couple entered into wedlock as per Hindu customs here on Friday. The couple, Philip and Venesa who were in love for ten years, learnt about the strength of the family relationship in India, wanted to get married as per Hindu customs here. But their efforts in this regard for the past some years failed until Mohammed Illiyas, a friend of Philip here came to their rescue. Illiyas arranged for their marriage at the Gomatha temple here. The couple came to Puducherry to solomnise their marriage. Last evening, Phillip, clad in a silk dhothi and shirt and Venesa in silk saree got married as per Hindu customs. A large number of people from Karuvadikuppam, hearing the news of the weddig, thronged the temple and greeted the couple. Later, Philip told newspersons that though they did not have any faith in any religion, they were impressed by the idea of family ties in Hindu religion. (UNI)
